by Maryam Nasseer Miarh (Ammey laylah) ,
The narrative follows two interconnected stories. The first centers on Maryam Yusuf (nicknamed Laylerh), a young woman living in a tense polygamous household in the impoverished Kofar Dumi area of Bauchi, Nigeria. Her father, Alhaji Yusuf, has three wives. Maryam's mother (Ummata) is marginalized and disrespected, particularly by Hajja (the first wife) and Ladiyo (the third wife), because she bore only daughters (Maryam and her sister Khadijah), while the other wives have sons. The household is characterized by conflict, jealousy, and a lack of care or education from the neglectful father. Despite this hostility, especially from Hajja and Ladiyo who constantly mock her ("Laylerh"), Maryam perseveres. She works at JM Company to support herself and her sister, striving for independence and a better life against significant familial opposition. Her mother offers emotional support and prayers. Maryam's nickname originates from her birth on the 25th night of Ramadan (Laylatul Qadr).
The second story shifts to Jalaal Areef, a young Nigerian billionaire residing in Egypt. He frequents the luxurious "L... In My Life Beach Resort" to find solace. Returning to his exclusive mansion, he finds his wife Fadeelah Jabber Shettima's living quarters in complete disarray. Frustrated by her laziness, entitlement, and refusal to perform any domestic duties despite his wealth, he confronts her. Fadeelah reacts defiantly, arguing that as the wife of a billionaire, she shouldn't have to cook, clean, or manage the house. She mocks the idea that his wealth is meaningless if she must do chores. Their marriage, arranged by his mother (Hajiya Rabi'atou Aliyu), is deeply unhappy. Fadeelah's lack of responsibility and respect leaves Jalaal feeling trapped and resentful. After a heated argument where she storms off, Jalaal takes a shower, reflecting on three years of marital misery marked by Fadeelah's indolence and lack of education or purpose, before falling asleep overwhelmed by despair.
